Hasbro’s Transformers toy line launched in 1984 and as we have discussed in past posts the series 1 figures all came from a Takara toy line. Here in this post we are going to show you early examples of Bluestreak and Jazz. These two figures , shown below, are unique not by the toy itself but by the packaging.  Commonly referred to as NGB, short for no grey border, the box does not contain the grey border that we are use to seeing on these boxes.

If you look closely at he artwork on the box you can see that the grid is shown between the artwork and the window of the box. This is where the grey border should be. The first released figures didn’t have this. These boxes are super rare to find. Some characters have only been found and documented in single digits and this counts as just the box itself. To find a sealed example is truly a wonderful experience. Even finding a worn box is a nice feeling. There are still a few that we have yet to see and several we have not had in hand. If you have some that you would like to share with us we would love to hear from you. Even if you aren’t selling.  Just so we can talk and possibly share images of the ones we have not seen.

Only the Autobot cars and Decepticon jets are known to been released without the grey border. Soundwave Megatron and Optimus Prime, the other boxed series 1 figures, all had grey borders. Hasbro did drop the grey border on the boxes in 1987 for the series 4 lineup.  Personally I like the look of the NGB over the border. It makes the artwork look so much cleaner.
